artSPARK

Raleigh, NC is host to an amazing number of creative events and festivals, one of the biggest being SPARKcon every fall. It is described as "Raleigh's Annual Festival of Creativity" and that creativity sparks from ideaSPARK, to danceSPARK, to geekSPARK, circusSPARK, and on and on till artSPARK. There is a main exhibition and I am honored to say that my recent painting, "Gena" will be displayed, having earned 2nd Prize! The exhibit will be up at VanNess and Fellows from Sept. 5-25, 2014.

Gena DuBose is an aerial artist of incredible strength and grace and I knew from the first time I saw her perform her lyra act, that I wanted to paint her! Her personality and physicality is too beautiful to have her face hidden in my Circus Bestiary series, so I made this one a portrait of her. I hope to paint many more!

I will be attending as an artist, as a business woman representing art:city, and as a live muralist, facilitating painting of a 15" long canvas with audience participation. (more on that later...)

Thanks to Jerry's Artarama in Raleigh for donating all of the materials for the mural project! Should be very exciting!

Fall Arts Fair: Raleigh 2013

This coming Saturday, Sept 7, I will be trying out a whole new kind of community art making.  On brainstorming ideas for a fun fair activity, Jill Brown and I hit upon this idea and ran with it.

I have designed a large paint-by-number mural that fair goers will have the chance to work on all together.  I will be there facilitating, but it will be very interesting to see how this grand experiment goes!  I am anticipating a bit of mess, and a lot of fun. Look for me among the trees near the playground!

Giuseppe will also be selling his gorgeous photos as blank cards, so come on down!

Take a look at his ever developing website for a mini preview.    www.zappalagiuseppe.com

Grow Up Great With the Arts

In January of 2013, I was fortunate enough to begin work with PNC's initiative Grow Up Great With the Arts as a teaching artist in the Wake County Public Schools.  Through the North Carolina Museum of Art, I work in PreK classrooms, bringing in the museum's collection through slides and open ended "Visual Thinking Strategies" discussions with 4 and 5 year olds. The students then have a lesson that introduces them to new techniques and materials and we make art together.

I love the work, I love the program and I love the openness and fearlessness of the art-making at that age.
